Planet Texas 2050: Resilience in Action, 2024 symposium
Symposium ·FloDisMod members participated in a number of events at the Planet Texas 2050 symposium, held at the University of Texas at Austin, 27-29 February, 2024. The symposium highlights efforts of groups exploring different aspects of resilience, and facilities community building around this topic in Texas and beyond.
Members of the FloDisMod team presented at several events at the 2024 Planet Texas 2050 symposium held on the campus at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin. Dr. Katherine Brown participated in a panel that explored various topics related to extreme heat. She highlighted how dynamics between heat and flooding can impact the spread of environmentally-driven diseases. Madison Russ, FloDisMod’s visualization expert, presented a talk ““Visualizing Hurricane Impacts: Components of Constructing 3D Landscapes” in the Texas Advanced Computing Center’s visualization laboratory on the UT main campus. Her presentation included an exhibit of three different visualization methods depicting the impacts of Hurricane Harvey on the coastal communities at the mouth of the Neches River. Three students associated with FloDisMod presented posters. Shukai Cai presented work on using the ADvanced CIRculation (ADCIRC) computational platform to model hurricane Dolly that affected the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Ira Narang presented her work on modeling the effects of dunes on storm surge in the same region. Finally, Litang Huang presented poster on ecological modeling of Chagas disease in North America.
